Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that, historically, has been used in a range of building materials. It has also been used in household products such as ironing boards and oven gloves. If left undisturbed asbestos usually poses no problems.

Care should be taken when handling asbestos to prevent the release of fibres as they can cause serious damage to health. If you need advice regarding the safe handling of this or any other material, please contact us on  0345 8 506 506.

Please note however we are unable to confirm if your waste actually is asbestos.

You can dispose of household white cement resin bonded asbestos free of charge at our Wakefield and Glasshoughton Recycling Centres, but you will need to make an appointment.

Disposal appointments must be made at least 24 hours before you want to bring it to either of our centres.

Asbestos can only be accepted Monday to Friday between 9am and 11am

You will need to provide the following information when making your appointment:

  • Confirmation that you are a Wakefield resident
  • Confirmation that the waste is wrapped in line with Renewi's guidance i.e. double wrapped in heavy duty plastic which has been taped and sealed
  • Your full name and address
  • Your contact telephone number
  • The registration number of the vehicle you will be driving when you come to deposit the waste
  • The approximate amount of asbestos  (bags or sheets)
  • The date you would like to dispose of the waste
  • Before leaving the site you will need to sign an asbestos form as proof of disposal

Please note that we do not accept asbestos from commercial businessesbuilders or trade customers. You may not be permitted to dispose of your waste if staff suspect it is trade waste.
