Our Education Centre

Education Centre at South Kirkby Facility

Renewi and Wakefield Council opened a new purpose built Waste Education and Recycling Education Centre from January 2016! The education centre is based at our state of the art waste facility in South Kirkby. Click here for google maps location.

The centre introduces you to the wonderful world of waste and recycling through interactive exhibits which explore the types of waste generated in Wakefield and the journey that waste takes from entering our facilities to it’s new destination. Did you know that your aluminium cans could potentially end up in an aeroplane?

The education centre is free to visit and open to the public for general viewing. To make the most out of your visit however why not arrange a bespoke visit with some interactive and engaging workshops which demonstrate the importance of the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle). Workshops are always fun but informative. To give you an idea, you might like to get your hands dirty in our wormery and composting area, go on a nature tour in our woodland area  or maybe junk re-use crafting is more to your taste?

Primary School Visits

A unique programme has been designed specifically for Primary Schools, tailored specifically for each year group from year 1-6. The programme has been planned around the National Curriculum and covers a wide range of curriculum areas, particularly english, science, maths, geography and art and design. Please find a flyer attached below for more information. You can also find a document entitled “Primary School Programme Photos” which showcases a range of photos taken on school visits to the centre which might give you a flavour of what you can expect.

The education centre offers a much broader range of activities than we can offer on our outreach programme due to our dedicated facilities on the site. Not only is there an opportunity to learn about waste but we have our very own outdoor learning environment for scavenger hunting and forest walks. Waste can destroy habitats and extract natural resources so we believe it is important for children to gain an holistic view of the importance of the 3Rs
