Better waste management in Wakefield

More recycling, less landfill, community benefits

Following the completion of a merger with Van Gansewinkel Groep B.V. (“Van Gansewinkel”) in February 2017, Shanks re-launched the combined business under a new brand, which included re-naming the Company from Shanks Group plc to Renewi plc.

Every year, Wakefield Council collects around 165,000 tonnes of rubbish. At the moment, approximately 39% of it is recycled and the rest is buried in landfill.

This is costly for the Council and the tax payer, and it's bad for the environment too.

This is why Renewi is working in partnership with the Council to improve the way waste is managed in Wakefield.

Since the contract commenced on 25 February 2013, Shanks began operating waste management services previously provided by the Council, including four Household Waste Recycling Centres and approximately 38 Bring Sites across the district. New waste management facilities have been built which have:

  • Helped to reduce landfill
  • Improved recycling levels to at least 52%
  • Created sustainable green energy

Improvements have been made to the Household Waste Recycling Centres which include:

  • Open seven days a week
  • More staff to help you to recycle your waste
  • Late night opening one night a week during British Summer Time
